1. 1

'Won't' is the short form of 'will not'. You use it to say that something is not going to happen in the future ('It won't rain tomorrow'), or that a person refuses to do something ('She won't talk to me').

'Won't' is the short form of 'will not'是 'will not' 的縮短形式。You use it to say你用它來說 something is not going to happen in the future某件事未來不會發生 ('It won't rain tomorrow'明天不會下雨),or that a person refuses to do something或某個人拒絕做某件事 ('She won't talk to me'她不肯跟我說話)。

That second use is important: 'won't' often carries a feeling of refusing, not just of not-happening. 'He won't help' can mean he is unwilling, not simply that he is unavailable.

That second use第二個用法 is important很重要:'won't' often carries常常帶著 a feeling of refusing拒絕的感覺,not just of not-happening不只是「不會發生」。'He won't help'「他不肯幫忙」 can mean可以是說 he is unwilling他不願意,not simply that he is unavailable而不只是他沒空。

We also use it for things — machines and objects — that fail to work: 'The door won't open', 'My phone won't turn on'. Here nothing is refusing on purpose, but English talks about it as if it were.

We also use it我們也拿它 for things用在東西上——machines and objects機器和物品——that fail to work就是那些動不了的:'The door won't open'門打不開、'My phone won't turn on'我的手機開不了機。Here在這裡,nothing is refusing on purpose沒有誰在故意拒絕,but English talks about it但英文說起它 as if it were就好像它在拒絕一樣。

In questions, 'won't you' is a soft, old-fashioned invitation: 'Won't you sit down?' In everyday speaking and in friendly writing, 'won't' is completely normal; in a very formal report or a legal paper, people often write 'will not' in full. If you want to sound strong or angry, saying the full 'will NOT' puts the stress on the refusing part.

In questions在問句裡,'won't you' is是 a soft, old-fashioned invitation一種柔軟、老派的邀請:'Won't you sit down?'「您不坐一下嗎?」。In everyday speaking and in friendly writing在日常口語和輕鬆的文字裡,'won't' is completely normal完全正常;in a very formal report or a legal paper在很正式的報告或法律文件裡,people often write 'will not' in full人們常把 'will not' 寫完整。If you want to sound strong or angry如果你想聽起來強硬或生氣,saying the full 'will NOT'把 'will NOT' 完整說出來,puts the stress on the refusing part就把重音壓在「拒絕」那一塊上。

組成A squeeze of two words into one: 'will not' → 'won't'. The strange part is the spelling — you would expect 'willn't'. Older English had a second form of 'will' that sounded more like 'woll', and that is the one that survived inside this contraction, which is why we say /woʊnt/ and not /wɪlnt/. The apostrophe stands where the 'o' of 'not' used to be.
