A Womble is one of a group of imaginary creatures from The Wombles, a British children's story and television programme. They are small, furry, big-nosed animals with pointed faces, and they live in burrows under Wimbledon Common, a large green park in London. Their whole way of life is picking up the rubbish that careless people leave behind and making it into something useful — furniture, machines, clothes. Each Womble is named after a place on a map. Because of the programme, British people of a certain age will understand "a Womble" as a friendly nickname for anyone who tidies up after others or collects things nobody wants, and there is even a verb, "to womble", used for going about picking up litter. This is very British cultural knowledge, from the 1970s. Outside Britain almost nobody will recognise it, so it is a word to understand when you meet it, not one to reach for yourself.

組成Invented, not built from meaningful pieces. The author Elisabeth Beresford took it from her young daughter's mispronunciation of the London place name Wimbledon as "Wombledon".
