1. 1

Wintel is a made-up computer word for the standard personal computer of the 1990s and 2000s: a machine running Microsoft Windows on an Intel chip. Those two companies fitted together so tightly, and for so long, that people stopped naming them separately and made one word out of the two. You use it to talk about that whole world as one thing — a Wintel PC, a Wintel machine, a Wintel shop (an office where all the computers are like that). Its natural opposite is a Mac. The word is business and technology talk, not everyday talk: it lives in newspaper reports about the computer industry, in office IT departments, and in writing about how those two companies together came to control the market. Often there is a slight edge to it — people said Wintel when they wanted to point at the pair as one big powerful team that was hard to compete with. Today the word sounds dated, because Apple, phones, and other chip makers broke that pairing apart, but you still meet it in anything written about that period.
