A winkle is a small sea snail with a dark, curled shell, found on rocks by the sea and eaten as food. In Britain, especially in seaside towns and in older working-class food, winkles are boiled and then picked out of the shell with a pin — that business with a pin is what British people picture when they hear the word. The full name is periwinkle, and 'winkle' is the short everyday form. students already know this creature well: it is very close to what we eat as 燒酒螺, so the picture is familiar even if the English word is not. The word is old-fashioned and regional in feeling; a young person in London may never have eaten one. There is also a verb, 'winkle out', meaning to get something out of a small tight place, or to get information out of a person who does not want to give it — from the picture of digging the snail out of its shell with a pin. 'It took an hour to winkle the truth out of him.' That verb use is informal and mostly British.
組成Shortened from periwinkle, the fuller name for the same sea snail. English does this a lot — cutting a long word down to its ending, the way 'phone' comes from 'telephone'.
