In football (soccer), rugby, hockey and similar team sports, a winger is a player whose job is out at the far left or far right edge of the field, not in the middle. That edge is called the wing, and the player on it is the winger. A winger is usually fast, good at running with the ball down the side, and known for crossing the ball into the middle for a teammate to score. People say 'left winger' and 'right winger' to say which side. The word is everyday sports language — commentators, newspapers, fans all use it — and never formal or technical. Careful with a second, different use: in , 'left-winger' and 'right-winger' mean a person with left-wing or right-wing political opinions, nothing to do with sport. Which one is meant is always clear from what is being talked about, but if you see 'right-winger' in a news article about an election, it is .
組成wing + -er. The -er ending makes a person who does or belongs to something. Here 'wing' is the side edge of a playing field — the same idea as a bird's wing sticking out at the side, or the wing of a building.
