    Windsor is a small town in southern England, on the River Thames just west of London. It is known worldwide for Windsor Castle, the largest lived-in castle anywhere, and one of the official homes of the British royal family — so in newspapers 'Windsor' very often means the castle or the royals rather than the town itself ('a service at Windsor', 'the Windsors'). That second use is worth knowing: in 1917, during the First World War, the British royal family dropped their German family name and took 'Windsor' from the castle instead, so the surname of the royal house is now House of Windsor. Hence journalists write 'the Windsors' the way they might write 'the Kennedys'. Two other everyday uses come from the same place: a Windsor knot is a wide triangular way of tying a , and a Windsor chair is a wooden chair with a rounded back made of upright sticks — both were named for the town's fashion and furniture-making. There are also Windsors in Canada (a car-making city opposite Detroit) and Australia, named after the English one, so context tells you which. Always capitalised.

組成An old English place name, from Old English Windlesōra: windel, a winch or reel, plus ōra, a bank or shore — 'the riverbank with a winch'. Boats on the Thames had to be hauled up at that spot, so the machine that did the hauling named the town. The windel part is the same root as 'windlass', the winch on a boat.
