It is known worldwide for Windsor Castle, the largest lived-in castle anywhere, and one of the official homes of the British royal family — so in newspapers 'Windsor' very often means the castle or the royals rather than the town itself ('a service at Windsor', 'the Windsors').
It is known worldwide for Windsor Castle它以溫莎城堡聞名全世界 the largest lived-in castle anywhere那是全世界最大、仍有人居住的城堡 and one of the official homes of the British royal family也是英國王室的正式住所之一 so in newspapers 'Windsor' very often means the castle or the royals rather than the town itself所以在報紙上Windsor常常是指城堡或王室,而不是那個小鎮 ('a service at Windsor', 'the Windsors')(像「在溫莎舉行的儀式」、「溫莎家族」這類說法)
That second use is worth knowing: in 1917, during the First World War, the British royal family dropped their German family name and took 'Windsor' from the castle instead, so the surname of the royal house is now House of Windsor. Hence journalists write 'the Windsors' the way they might write 'the Kennedys'.
That second use is worth knowing這第二種用法值得知道 in 1917, during the First World War一次大戰期間的1917年 the British royal family dropped their German family name英國王室放棄了原本的德國姓氏 and took 'Windsor' from the castle instead改用城堡的名字Windsor當姓氏 so the surname of the royal house is now House of Windsor所以王室的姓氏現在是溫莎王朝 Hence journalists write 'the Windsors' the way they might write 'the Kennedys'因此記者寫「the Windsors」,就像寫「the Kennedys」一樣
Two other everyday uses come from the same place: a Windsor knot is a wide triangular way of tying a , and a Windsor chair is a wooden chair with a rounded back made of upright sticks — both were named for the town's fashion and furniture-making.
Two other everyday uses come from the same place還有兩個日常用法也來自這個地方 a Windsor knot is a wide triangular way of tying a necktie溫莎結是一種打領帶的寬三角形打法 and a Windsor chair is a wooden chair with a rounded back made of upright sticks溫莎椅則是一種椅背用直條木棍做成圓弧形的木椅 both were named for the town's fashion and furniture-making兩者都是因為這個小鎮的流行和家具製作而得名
There are also Windsors in Canada (a car-making city opposite Detroit) and Australia, named after the English one, so context tells you which. Always capitalised.
There are also Windsors in Canada (a car-making city opposite Detroit) and Australia加拿大(底特律對岸一個汽車工業城市)和澳洲也都有叫Windsor的地方 named after the English one都是以英格蘭這個Windsor命名的 so context tells you which所以要靠上下文判斷是指哪一個 Always capitalised永遠要大寫
組成An old English place name, from Old English Windlesōra: windel, a winch or reel, plus ōra, a bank or shore — 'the riverbank with a winch'. Boats on the Thames had to be hauled up at that spot, so the machine that did the hauling named the town. The windel part is the same root as 'windlass', the winch on a boat.
