Hair that is not your own, made to be worn on the head. People wear wigs for many reasons: to cover hair loss after illness, to change their look, for theatre and film, for drag and fashion, and — in Britain and some other places — as part of the official dress of judges and in court. A wig covers the whole head; a smaller piece that covers only part is a 'hairpiece' or 'toupee' (a toupee usually means a man's, for a bald patch). The verb 'wig' exists but is rare on its own; what you will actually meet is 'wig out', American slang for losing control of yourself, either from panic or from excitement, and the older 'flip your wig', which means the same. There is also 'bigwig', meaning an important person — from the days when the biggest wig marked the highest rank. In recent internet slang, 'wig!' shouted alone means something was so impressive it blew your hair off; that is very casual and already dating.

Clipping of periwig, itself an alteration of French perruque; the 'reprimand' sense is of uncertain origin.
