Belonging to a wife, or thought to suit a good wife. It describes qualities, duties, or behaviour — 'wifely duties', 'wifely devotion', 'a wifely smile'. The important thing is the idea sitting underneath it: that there is a proper way for a wife to behave. That idea is old-fashioned, so the word now sounds old-fashioned too. Today it turns up in three places. In old novels and historical writing, used straight. In modern writing, used with a raised eyebrow — a writer who says 'she performed her wifely duties' is often criticising the expectation, not praising the wife. And between couples, used as a joke: 'look at me being all wifely, ironing your shirt.' A woman today would rarely describe herself as wifely without smiling. Note it is an adjective only; there is no matching everyday 'husbandly' in common use, which itself tells you something about where the word came from.
