Wicklow is a county on the east coast of the Republic of Ireland, directly south of Dublin. It is also the name of the small harbour town that is its county town. Irish people call it the Garden of Ireland, because of its mountains, lakes, woods and deep valleys — Glendalough, an early monastery set between two lakes, is the place visitors go first. Because it is so close to Dublin, it works as the capital's countryside: people drive out for a walk on a Sunday, and film crews use it when they need mountains. The Wicklow Way, Ireland's first long-distance walking path, runs through it. In Irish the county is Cill Mhantáin, which has nothing to do with the English name — the two names come from completely different languages and different stories, which is common in Ireland.
