A describing word for people, places or culture that feel safe, ordinary, and dull — traditional middle-class white American life with nothing surprising in it. A white-bread suburb, a white-bread family, white-bread music. The comparison is to plain white sliced bread: soft, mild, no flavour, no texture, nothing to chew on. It is always a criticism, and it is never neutral, so be careful — it carries a comment about race as well as taste, saying something is bland *because* it is narrowly white and mainstream. Some listeners find it insulting, others find it fair social comment; it is mostly American, mostly informal, and it is used more in writing about culture than in polite conversation.
