A card game for four people, playing as two pairs sitting opposite each other. The players take turns putting down one card each, and the highest card wins that round — a round is called a 'trick' — and the pair that wins the most tricks wins. It was hugely popular in Britain and America in the 1800s and early 1900s; small towns and churches held 'whist drives', evenings where lots of tables played at once. Today it is mostly older people, or families who have always played it, and it is a little old-fashioned. You will meet the word most often in old novels and films rather than in real life. Whist matters for one more reason: bridge grew out of it. If a student knows 橋牌, telling them whist is its simpler explains the word in one line.
組成Probably a changed form of 'whisk' — from the way players whisk (sweep) the cards up quickly after each trick. Later people seem to have thought the word was the old command 'whist!' meaning 'be quiet!', because the game needs concentration, and that idea likely helped fix the spelling.
