Whipsnade is a place name — a village in Bedfordshire, in the south of England, and above all the name of the large open-air zoo there, properly called Whipsnade Zoo (today ZSL Whipsnade Zoo). It opened in 1931 and is the country zoo of the Zoological Society of London, which also runs London Zoo. What makes it worth knowing is the idea behind it: instead of small cages, the animals live in very large grassy paddocks on hundreds of acres of chalk hillside, close to how they would live in the wild, and visitors drive through or ride a little train to see them. It was one of the first zoos in the world built that way, and it became the model many other zoos copied. British people use the name as a kind of shorthand for a zoo where animals roam freely, in contrast to old-style city zoos. There is also a famous white chalk lion cut into the hillside there, big enough to be seen from far away. As a proper noun it always takes a capital letter and no 'the'.
