The thin, watery, slightly yellow-green liquid left over when milk turns solid — when it goes sour, or when a cheesemaker adds something to make it curdle. The lumps that form are the ; the liquid that drains away is the whey. It is a mass noun, so no "a" and no plural. Most meet it now through the gym: whey protein powder is made by drying this liquid, because the leftover liquid turns out to be full of protein. That is a fairly recent turn — for most of history whey was the cheap by-product farmers fed to pigs. You also meet it in the old nursery rhyme about Little Miss Muffet eating her and whey. It sounds exactly like "way", which is worth knowing before someone says it to you out loud.
組成Does not split. A very old Germanic word, from Old English hwǣġ, related to Dutch wei — it has been in English since before Latin or French words arrived, which is why it is so short and plain.
