Where someone or something is, especially when that location is not known for sure — 'his whereabouts are unknown' means nobody knows exactly where he is. It's also used as a slightly more specific version of 'where' when asking a question — 'Whereabouts do you live?' asks for more detail than a simple 'Where do you live?', like the name of the neighborhood, not just the city.
