A small open cart you push by hand, with one wheel at the front and two long handles at the back. You lift the handles, the load balances on the single wheel, and you walk it forward. Gardeners and builders use them for soil, bricks, plants, sand, rubbish — heavy things over short distances. The one wheel is the whole point. It lets the barrow turn in a tiny space and run along a narrow plank where a two-wheeled cart would not fit, though it also means you must keep it balanced yourself. It is a countable noun: a wheelbarrow, two wheelbarrows. British speakers very often shorten it to "barrow." There is also a verb, less common, meaning to carry something in one: "we wheelbarrowed the bricks round the back." Two uses beyond the garden are worth knowing. Children play "wheelbarrow races," where one child walks on their hands while a partner holds their ankles. And people reach for the image when they talk about money losing value — "you needed a wheelbarrow of cash to buy bread" — from the old photographs of hyperinflation.
