A sound people make when something is fun and a little bit thrilling — going down a slide, swinging high, a car going fast over a bump. It is a shout of pleasure, not a word with a meaning you can look up in pieces. Written down, it usually has an mark: "Whee!" It belongs mostly to children, and to adults playing with children or acting playful. A grown-up saying it seriously at work would sound strange — which is exactly why adults do say it, on purpose, as a joke. That joking use has grown a second life online and in speech: a flat, dry "Whee." with a full stop, meaning the opposite — "how very ," said about something boring. Tone and carry the whole difference. "Whee!" is real joy; "Whee." is sarcasm. Your students will meet both in messages and comments. It does not change form, has no grammar around it, and stands alone as its own sentence. Compare it with its neighbours: "wow" is surprise, "yay" is celebrating good news, "whee" is the feeling of the ride itself while it is happening.

組成An imitation of the sound people actually make when they are having fun — a long, high, breathy noise. Words like this (whee, whoosh, wow, ouch) are not built from smaller parts; the spelling is just an attempt to write down a noise.
