1. 1

An American breakfast cereal — flakes made from whole wheat, sold in a bright orange box, eaten with cold milk. It has been around since the 1920s. The reason a meets this word is not the food. Wheaties has advertised itself for decades as "The Breakfast of Champions," and it puts famous athletes on the front of the box — Olympic winners, star baseball and basketball players. Getting your face on a Wheaties box became a real symbol in America of having made it to the very top of your sport. So Americans use it that way in talk: "he's Wheaties-box famous now," or joking with a friend who did something impressive, "someone ate their Wheaties this morning" — meaning you have a lot of energy today. It is a brand name, so it takes a capital W. The shape is plural but people treat it as one thing: "Wheaties is my favourite cereal" sounds normal to Americans, and so does "I ate Wheaties." British speakers will know it only vaguely, and in Taiwan you will not find it in most supermarkets. Treat it as culture more than vocabulary: you need to recognise it when an American mentions it, not to use it yourself.

組成wheat + -ie + -s. The -ie is the friendly, small-sounding ending English puts on things (cookie, brownie, sweetie), and the -s makes it plural — so the name means something like "little wheaty bits." Brand names often use this ending to sound cheerful and homely.
