Using or showing the customs, clothes, food, habits or ways of doing business that are typical of Western Europe and North America. It is the past participle of *westernize*, and it works mainly as a describing word placed before a noun or after *be*: a westernized city, a westernized version of the dish, "his family is quite westernized". You can use it of a person, a family, a place, a meal, a building, a company, a lifestyle. A few things to feel. First, it is nearly always a matter of degree — "quite westernized", "heavily westernized", "a bit westernized" — because nobody is completely one thing or the other. Second, the tone shifts with the speaker and with what is being described. Of a person or a family it is usually just descriptive, sometimes admiring. Of food, art, or a tradition it very often means "watered down for foreigners", and is mildly negative. Of a diet it is now almost always negative in health writing, where "a westernized diet" is code for more meat, more sugar, more processed food. Third, remember that it points at culture, not at a map: a westernized office in Taipei is not west of anywhere. British writers may spell it *westernised*, and you will see both *westernized* and *Westernized* with a capital W.
