Said of a room, house, hotel, or office that has good furniture and everything you need in it. It is a compliment about equipment and comfort, not about beauty or size — a well-appointed kitchen has the good knives, the proper oven, the pans that actually work. You meet this word mostly in the language of selling and describing property: hotel websites, estate agents' listings, travel writing. It sounds formal, slightly old-fashioned, and a bit expensive; nobody says it about their own flat unless they are joking. The surprise for is the verb inside it. 'Appoint' normally means 'to choose someone for a job' — they appointed her manager. But 'appoint' has an older meaning, 'to fit out, to supply with what is needed', and this compound preserves it. That older meaning is nearly gone from modern English except here and in a few phrases like 'a appointed cabin', which is why the word can feel strange at first sight.
