The quality of being weird — strange, unusual, hard to explain or hard to feel comfortable with. It is the noun form of 'weird'. You use it in two main ways. First, for the strange quality itself: 'the weirdness of the dream', 'there is a weirdness about that house'. Here it names a feeling you get, often one you cannot put your finger on. Second, and very common in everyday speech, for strange behaviour or a strange situation as a whole: 'I can't deal with all this weirdness', 'after the argument there was some weirdness between them'. In this second use it often means an awkward, uncomfortable atmosphere between people — nobody is fighting, but something is not right. Note that 'weird' in English is not always bad. Young people often say 'weird' about something they enjoy — a weird movie, weird music — meaning strange in an interesting way. So 'weirdness' can be a compliment: 'I love the weirdness of his paintings.' The tone depends completely on the speaker's voice and the situation. The word is informal to neutral; you would say it to friends easily, but in a formal report you would more likely write 'strangeness' or 'unusual features'. It is normally uncountable — 'a lot of weirdness', not 'many weirdnesses' — though writers sometimes break this for effect.
