1. 1舉重選手;舉重運動員

A person who lifts heavy metal bars as a sport. In competition a weightlifter tries to lift the greatest weight they can, one or two lifts only, and wins by the number of lifted — this is an Olympic sport, and Taiwan's Kuo Hsing-chun is one of the world's most famous weightlifters. In looser everyday talk, people also call someone a weightlifter if they train seriously with weights at the gym, even without competing. The word is a straightforward compound: someone who lifts weights. Note the difference from a bodybuilder, who trains to make the body look a certain way and is judged on appearance; a weightlifter is judged only on how much they can lift.

組成weight (重量、槓片) + lift (舉起) + -er (做這件事的人)。三塊拼起來就是「舉重量的人」

同家族的字

  • liftthe verb inside it — to raise something up
  • weightliftingthe sport itself, built from the same two words
