A webchat is a conversation you have by typing, inside a website — most often the little box that pops up in the bottom corner saying 'Hi, how can I help?'. You type your question about your order or your bill, and someone (or now, very often, a bot) types back. Banks, airlines, phone companies and shopping sites all run one. So the ordinary meaning today is customer service by typing, not by phone. 'I'll try the webchat' means 'I don't want to wait on the phone, I'll type to them instead.' It can also be a verb: to webchat someone. The word has an older, wider meaning too: any chat room or typed conversation happening on a website, including a public one where a famous person answers readers' questions live. British newspapers used to run these and called them webchats. You still meet that use, but it is fading. Worth knowing: 'live chat' is the more common name on real websites these days, and 'chat support' in business talk. Webchat is understood everywhere but has a slightly older feel. Also note that it is typed, not spoken — a webchat is not a video call.
