A waterbed is a bed whose mattress is a large plastic or rubber bag filled with water instead of springs and cotton. When you lie down, the water moves under you and takes the shape of your body, so it feels soft and a bit like floating. If you move, you can feel a small wave — and so can the person sleeping next to you, which is either fun or depending on who you ask. The word carries a strong period feeling. Waterbeds were very fashionable in the 1970s and 80s, especially in America, and they were sold as luxurious, modern, slightly sexy. Because of that, when someone mentions a waterbed today it often comes with a joke or a smile, the way people talk about lava lamps or disco. They are much rarer now — they are heavy (a full one can be too heavy for an old floor), hard to move, need electricity to keep the water warm, and if the bag tears you have a very bad day. So a young person in Taiwan may know the word from films without ever having seen one. There is one place they are still genuinely used and taken seriously: hospitals and care homes sometimes use water mattresses for patients who must stay in bed a long time, because spreading the weight evenly helps prevent . That use has no joke attached to it at all.
組成water + bed — a compound of two very ordinary English words, joined and written as one. Nothing hidden here; the word says exactly what the thing is, which is why it needed no explanation when it was invented.

- 1
A bed with a tough plastic mattress filled with water.
- When I ask to sleep over at my friends’ houses, I am told I am not allowed. Boys are not allowed. My friend Caitie’s mother argues about this on the phone with my mother. I realize my mother is not on my side. Later, my mother tells me Caitie’s mother is divorced, has a tattoo, and sleeps on a waterbed, the relevance of which doesn’t seem clear. I think Caitie’s mother is cool.
