A short written form of "Washington" — the American state in the north-west of the USA, near Canada. You see it in addresses, in lists of states, in old newspapers, and on forms where there is not much space. It is not spoken; if you are talking, you say the whole word "Washington".
of "Washington"「Washington」的 A short written form簡短寫法 — in the north-west of the USA在美國西北部、 near Canada靠近加拿大 the American state的那個美國的州。 You你會 in addresses在地址裡、 in lists of states在州名清單上、 in old newspapers在舊報紙裡、 and還有在 where there is not much space空間不多的 forms表格上 see it看到它。 It它 is not spoken不是用說的; if you are talking如果你是在講話, you say你會說 the whole word完整的字 "Washington"「Washington」。
Note the full stop at the end: that dot is there because letters have been cut off the word, and leaving it out looks wrong in careful writing.
Note注意 at the end結尾 the full stop的句點: that dot那個點 is there在那裡, because是因為 letters字母 have been cut off the word被從這個字裁掉了; leaving it out漏掉它, in careful writing在講究的書寫裡 looks wrong看起來就是錯的。
These days the post office prefers the two-letter code WA, so "Wash." feels a little old-fashioned — you meet it more in books and older documents than on a modern envelope.
These days現在 the post office郵局 prefers比較喜歡 the two-letter code兩個字母的代碼 WA, so所以 "Wash."「Wash.」 feels感覺 a little old-fashioned有點過時 — than on a modern envelope比起在現代的信封上, you你 more更常 in books and older documents在書和較舊的文件裡 meet it遇到它。
One more thing worth knowing: it stands for the STATE, not for Washington, D.C., the capital city on the other side of the country. When people mean the capital, they write "Washington, D.C." or just "D.C.", never "Wash."
One more thing worth knowing還有一件值得知道的事: it它 stands for代表的是 the STATE那個「州」, not for不是 Washington, D.C.華盛頓特區 — on the other side of the country在國家另一頭的 the capital city那座首都。 When people mean the capital當人們指的是首都的時候, they write他們會寫 "Washington, D.C."「Washington, D.C.」 or just或只寫 "D.C."「D.C.」, never "Wash."絕不會是「Wash.」。
組成Just the first four letters of Washington, cut short and closed with a full stop. The state was named after George Washington, the first US president.
