1. 1

A warm-down is the set of easy, gentle exercises you do AFTER hard exercise — after a race, a game, a dance class, a gym session. Usually it means slow or walking, then stretching, for maybe five or ten minutes, so that your heart rate comes down slowly instead of all at once and your muscles do not go stiff.

A warm-down是 you你 AFTER hard exercise在激烈運動「之後」 do做的 the set of easy, gentle exercises那一套輕鬆、和緩的動作 — a race賽跑、 a game比賽、 a dance class舞蹈課、 a gym session健身房那一場 after之後。 Usually通常 it means指的是 slow jogging慢慢跑 or或 walking走路, then再 stretching伸展, for maybe five or ten minutes大概五到十分鐘, so that好讓 your heart rate你的心跳 comes down slowly慢慢降下來 instead of all at once而不是一口氣掉下來, and而且 your muscles你的肌肉 do not go stiff不會變僵硬。

It is a noun: 'do a warm-down', 'a proper warm-down'. You will also see the two words written without the , and as a verb phrase: 'warm down' ('The runners warmed down on the grass').

It它 is a noun是名詞: 'do a warm-down'「做個緩和」, 'a proper warm-down'「好好收個操」。 You will also see你也會看到 the two words這兩個字 written without the hyphen寫成沒有連字號的樣子, and as a verb phrase也當動詞片語用: 'warm down' ('The runners warmed down on the grass'跑者在草地上收操)。

Two honest notes. First, in American English people say cool-down / cool down far more often than warm-down; warm-down is more of a British thing, made to pair with warm-up. Second, sports scientists now argue about whether warming down really does much for soreness at all — but coaches and PE teachers still tell everyone to do it, so the word is alive and you will hear it.

Two honest notes兩點老實話。 First第一, in American English在美式英文裡 people say大家說 cool-down / cool down 的次數, than warm-down比說 warm-down far more often多得多; warm-down is more of a British thing比較是英國的講法, made to pair neatly with warm-up造出來剛好跟 warm-up 配成一對。 Second第二, sports scientists運動科學家 now現在 argue about還在爭論 whether warming down收操 for soreness對痠痛 really does much at all到底有沒有多少用 — but但 coaches教練 and PE teachers和體育老師 still仍然 tell everyone to do it叫大家照做, so所以 the word這個字 is alive還活著, and you will hear it你會聽到它。

It belongs to sport and exercise talk; you would not use it about anything else.

It它 belongs to屬於 sport and exercise運動和健身的 talk話題; you你 about anything else講別的事 would not use it不會用它。

組成warm + down, built as the mirror image of warm-up. Warm-up = raise the body before exercise; warm-down = bring it back down after. The word was made on purpose to match, which is why 'warm' sounds a bit odd in it — you are not really getting warmer.

同家族的字

  • warm-upthe same 'warm' + a direction word; warm-down was coined as its opposite
  • cool-downsame pattern, and in American English the usual word for this very thing
