Wares are things somebody has to sell, especially when they are being sold in the open — at a market, from a cart, at a stall, door to door — rather than in a proper shop. The word has an old, story-book feeling. You meet it in tales and history books: a traveller comes to town and lays out his wares on a cloth. The word is almost always plural: people say "his wares", not "his ware". It also nearly always belongs to a person you can picture — a seller who carries his goods and shows them to you. That is why "sell your wares" and "display your wares" are the phrases you will actually see. Modern people still use it, but half-jokingly, or to sound old-fashioned on purpose. A writer might say a politician is "selling his wares" to voters, meaning he is showing off what he offers, and the old word makes him sound like a market trader. The singular "ware" survives mainly stuck to other words: hardware, software, kitchenware, silverware, glassware — each one means "goods of that kind".
