noun · B2
A practice battle in which real soldiers act out a fight against a pretend enemy, so that an army can test its plans and see how well they would work.
One way to hold this word: a battle shrunk down to a size you can run safely. There are two sides, a set of rules, a start and an end — everything a battle has except a real enemy. Because it is only a model, you can stop it, look at what went wrong, and run it again. That is why English calls it a game even when the people doing it are entirely serious.
