To wangle something is to get it by being clever — talking someone round, pulling a small trick, knowing the right person, bending a rule a little. The thing you wangle is usually something good that you were not really supposed to get: a day off, a free upgrade, a ticket to a full show, an invitation. The tone is important. Wangle is informal, mostly British, and usually said with a smile. It is naughty rather than wicked. If you say 'I wangled two free tickets', you sound pleased with yourself and your listener will probably be impressed, not shocked. Compare 'cheat' or 'steal', which are serious accusations — wangle is not one. The common patterns are 'wangle something' ('He wangled an invitation'), 'wangle something out of someone' ('She wangled fifty pounds out of her dad'), and 'wangle it so that…' ('I wangled it so that we sat together'). That last one is very useful and very natural. It is not a common word in American English, and even in Britain it sounds a bit older — you will hear it from adults more than from teenagers. Nobody would be confused by it, though.
