The nickname of Australia's national men's rugby union team — "the Wallabies". Australian sports teams almost all have an animal nickname, and this one comes from the , a small hopping animal like a little kangaroo. Because it names one team, it takes "the" and behaves like a plural: the Wallabies have won, the Wallabies are playing New Zealand. British and Australian English will often treat it as a plural even where Americans would not. Note that this is rugby union, not rugby league — the league team is called the Kangaroos, and the two are different sports with different teams, which trips up even native speakers. Capital W, and always plural in this meaning; "a " with a capital would mean one player from that team. With a small w, wallabies is simply the plural of the animal.
