A small music player you carry on your body and listen to through headphones. Sony made the first one in 1979 — a portable cassette player — and it was such a hit that for about twenty years many people called ANY personal portable player a walkman, no matter who made it. That is why it is written both ways: capital W when you mean the Sony product, small w when people use it loosely. Later versions played CDs, then MP3s, and the dictionary sense here is the MP3 one. In real life today the word is mostly historical or nostalgic: young people carry phones, and if you say "walkman" they will picture something from their parents' time. The plural is — Sony said Walkmans, but plenty of people say Walkmen as a joke, and careful writers just avoid it.
組成walk + man. Sony coined it after an earlier product called the Pressman, a small tape recorder for reporters — so the -man ending is copied from that, not from any idea of a man walking. The MP3-player meaning is a genericized trademark: a brand name that spread to the whole product type.
