Wooden panelling on the lower part of an inside wall — the wood that covers the wall from the floor up to about waist height, with normal painted wall above it. You see it in old British and American houses, in old churches, in courtrooms. It is a fairly old, bookish word; most people today say 'panelling', or 'wainscoting' (which is more common than 'wainscot' itself). Note the dictionary line here says 'a skirting board' — that is the British sense of the narrow board along the bottom edge of a wall where it meets the floor (Americans call that a 'baseboard'). So the word covers a range: sometimes the whole panelled lower wall, sometimes just that bottom strip. If someone says a room is wainscoted, picture wood on the bottom half of the walls. It can also be a verb: to wainscot a room is to line its walls with this wood. Careful with the sound — the second half is said like 'scot' or, quite often, 'skut', not 'scoat'.
