A vortex is a fast, spinning mass of air or liquid, like a whirlpool in water going down a drain, or the spinning air in a tornado. People also use it to describe getting pulled into something that's hard to escape — "a vortex of debt" or "a vortex of emotions" means you feel swept up and out of control, like being pulled into a spinning hole.
