A large port city on the far east coast of Russia, on the Sea of Japan, close to the borders with China and North Korea — much nearer to Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing than to Moscow. It is Russia's main Pacific port and the home of its Pacific fleet, so it is a navy town as well as a shipping town. Most English speakers meet the name in one of two ways. First, as the far end of the Trans-Siberian Railway: the train leaves Moscow and runs about nine thousand east, roughly a week of travelling, and stops here. Because of that, the name is often used in English simply to mean "as far east as Russia goes" — the end of the line. Second, in news about Russia's relations with Asia. The city was Chinese territory until 1860, which is why it still has a Chinese name, 海參崴, that older speakers may know better than the Russian one. Say it vlad-i-vos-TOK, with the weight at the end.
組成Borrowed from Russian Vladivostok, built from two Russian pieces: vlad-, "to rule, to own" (as in Vladimir), and vostok, "the east". So the name means something like "ruler of the east" — a name chosen in 1860 to say plainly what Russia intended the place to be.
