    To vitrify something is to turn it into glass, or into something hard and glassy, usually by heating it until it fuses. It works both ways in a sentence: you can vitrify something ('the vitrifies the clay'), or a substance can vitrify by itself ('the sand vitrified in the heat'). The passive is very common too — 'the waste is vitrified before storage'. The everyday place you meet the result is the past participle used as an adjective: 'vitrified tiles', sold everywhere for floors because the glassy surface takes in no water and no stain. Potters use the word constantly: fire the clay high enough and the body vitrifies, which is what makes porcelain hard and watertight; underfire it and it stays porous. Beyond pottery: nuclear plants vitrify liquid waste into glass blocks; a lightning strike can vitrify sand into a strange twisted tube; and in labs, vitrifying eggs or cells means freezing them so fast that the water goes solid without ever making ice crystals. The word is technical throughout. Nobody vitrifies anything in casual conversation — you'd say 'it turned to glass'.
