Visceral describes a feeling that is strong, instant, and comes from deep inside your body rather than from careful thinking, like fear, disgust, or excitement that hits you before you can reason about it. A 'visceral reaction' is a gut reaction: you feel it in your stomach or chest before your brain works out why. It is also used for stories, movies, or art that make you feel something very strongly and physically, not just intellectually. It is a fairly advanced, formal word, common in writing about emotions or art.
