    Vis-à-vis is a small formal word meaning "regarding", "about", or "compared with". You use it to introduce the thing you are measuring something against: "Our position vis-à-vis the other suppliers is strong" means our position when set beside theirs. It appears in business writing, academic writing, and reports far more than in conversation, and saying it aloud in a casual chat can sound like you are performing.

    Two shades live inside it, and context tells them apart. One is plain "concerning": "What is your view vis-à-vis the new rule?" The other is genuinely comparative, holding two things face to face: "the euro vis-à-vis the dollar". The comparative sense is the older and, to careful writers, the better one — some editors dislike the loose "concerning" use, though it is now common enough that you will not be marked wrong for it.

    It is pronounced roughly "vee-za-VEE"; the s at the end of the first vis is silent, and the final s is silent too. Written English keeps the French accent, but you will often see it as vis-a-vis with no accent, and that is accepted.

    There is also a rare noun use — your vis-à-vis is the person seated facing you — but a will almost never meet it.

組成Taken straight from French vis-à-vis, literally "face to face": vis is an old French word for face, à means "to", so the picture is two faces turned toward each other. That physical image explains the comparing sense — you put two things face to face to weigh them.
