A vicuña is a wild South American animal of the camel family, a slim, graceful cousin of the llama and alpaca, living high in the Andes. It is the smallest of that group, sandy-brown above and pale underneath, with a long neck and a nervous, deer-like look. The same word also names the cloth or wool made from its fleece — 'a vicuña coat', 'lined with vicuña'. That second meaning carries something you should know: vicuña wool is the finest and most expensive natural fibre in the world. The hairs are extraordinarily thin, the animals are wild and can only be shorn every two or three years, and they were hunted almost to extinction for that wool before being protected. So in fashion and business writing, vicuña often works as a byword for luxury the way cashmere does, only more so. The Inca reserved the cloth for royalty. In English the word is written with the Spanish ñ, but you will very often see it spelled plainly as vicuna, and both are accepted. It is said roughly 'vi-KOO-nya'.
