VGA is a short way of naming an old standard for computer screens and the pictures they show. It comes from the first letters of Video Graphics Array. When people first used it in the late 1980s, it meant a screen that could show many colours at once and looked clear and sharp for that time. So in older books and dictionaries you will read that VGA means "good quality colour graphics" — and that was true then. Today it is the opposite. Screens now are far better, so when someone says "only VGA" they usually mean small, old, low quality. The number people attach to it is 640 x 480, which is a very small picture now. There is a second and more common use today: VGA is the name of the plug and cable that carries the picture from a computer to a screen or a projector. It is the blue plug with 15 small holes, often with two screws at the sides. In a Taiwanese classroom or office, if someone says "Do you have a VGA cable?" or "Is this a VGA port?", that is what they mean — the connector, not the colour quality. It is a noun, and it is often used before another noun: a VGA cable, a VGA port, a VGA adapter. You say the three letters one by one, V-G-A. There is no need to know what the letters stand for to use the word; almost nobody says the full name.
