A verger is the person who looks after the inside of a church — mostly an or Episcopal church — and keeps its services running smoothly. That means unlocking and cleaning, arranging chairs and cushions, laying out books and candles, showing visitors where to sit, and walking ahead of the clergy in a procession. In a big cathedral it is a paid, full-time job with real dignity; in a small parish it may be a volunteer everyone knows by name. The verger is not a priest and does not lead worship; they make the worship possible. English has another word, sexton, for a similar role that leans more toward the building, the graveyard and the bells. In Chinese-speaking churches the exact role often does not exist, so the word usually needs explaining rather than translating. It is a British-flavoured word; in American English, outside Episcopal churches, many people would not recognise it.
