A veneer is a thin layer of nice-looking material — often wood — glued onto the surface of something cheaper, to make it look better than it really is, like a table made of cheap wood covered with a thin layer of real, good-looking wood. People also use "veneer" to talk about people: "a veneer of " means someone only looks polite or calm on the outside, while underneath they might feel, or be, very different — the nice surface is thin and could crack.
