Vegetation means plants — all of them together, as one mass, covering a place. You use it when you care about the plants as a covering or a habitat rather than as individual plants: the vegetation on a , dense jungle vegetation, the vegetation that grows back after a fire. It is uncountable, and it has no picture of beauty in it; 'flowers' or 'greenery' sound pleasant, but 'vegetation' is neutral and slightly scientific. You meet it most in geography, biology, news reports and travel writing. Because it sounds technical, using it in casual talk about your garden would sound odd — you would say 'the plants' or 'the weeds'. Note that it never means vegetables: vegetation is what grows wild on the land, not what you eat for dinner.
