Said about a plan, a system, a product, a team, a skill用在計畫、制度、產品、團隊、技能上 something that people have praised loudly and often指人們大聲、常常稱讚的東西 usually too loudly通常讚美得有點過頭 This is not a neutral word這不是個中性的詞。
When a writer says "the vaunted new security system," they are almost always about to tell you it failed, or that it is not as special as everyone said. The praise is in the word; the doubt is in the writer's voice.
When a writer says當作者寫 "the vaunted new security system,"「the vaunted new security system」時 they are almost always about to tell you it failed他們幾乎總是接下來要告訴你這個系統失敗了 or that it is not as special as everyone said或者根本沒有大家說的那麼特別 The praise is in the word稱讚藏在詞義裡 the doubt is in the writer's voice質疑則藏在作者的語氣裡。
So it works like a quiet eye-roll: "the much-vaunted reforms," "their vaunted defence." You will see "much-vaunted" together very often — that pair is almost a fixed phrase. It belongs to newspapers, sports writing, business writing and reviews, not to everyday conversation; a student is far more likely to read it than to need to say it.
So it works like a quiet eye-roll所以它的作用像是一個不動聲色的翻白眼 "the much-vaunted reforms,"「the much-vaunted reforms」 "their vaunted defence."「their vaunted defence」 You will see "much-vaunted" together very often你會常常看到「much-vaunted」連在一起用 that pair is almost a fixed phrase這個搭配幾乎已經是固定用法 It belongs to newspapers, sports writing, business writing and reviews它屬於報紙、體育報導、商業報導和評論的用詞 not to everyday conversation不是日常對話會用的 a Taiwanese student is far more likely to read it than to need to say it台灣學生讀到它的機會,遠比需要自己說出口的機會多得多。
Note that the doubt is not built into the dictionary meaning by force — you could in theory use it as straight praise, and older writing sometimes does — but in modern English the sneer comes with it so that if you use it , readers will still hear it . There is also a verb, to vaunt (to boast about something), but it now sounds old and ; the -ed adjective is the form that survives in normal reading.
Note that要注意 the doubt is not built into the dictionary meaning by force這種質疑並不是硬性寫進字典定義裡的 you could in theory use it as straight praise理論上你也可以純粹拿它來稱讚 and older writing sometimes does早期的文章有時候也真的這樣用 but in modern English但在現代英文裡 the sneer comes with it so reliably那種嘲諷的味道已經如此固定地跟著它 that if you use it warmly就算你用得很真心 readers will still hear it coldly讀者聽起來還是會覺得冷嘲熱諷 There is also a verb, to vaunt也有動詞形式 to vaunt (to boast about something)(誇耀某件事) but it now sounds old and bookish但現在聽起來老派又書卷氣 the -ed adjective is the form that survives in normal reading-ed 形容詞形式才是日常閱讀裡還存活著的用法。
組成vaunt (to boast, to praise loudly) + -ed, the ending that makes a past-participle adjective — so vaunted = having been boasted about. The -ed ending traces back through Middle English and Old English -od all the way to an old Germanic verb ending; it is the same -ed you already know from walked and painted, just doing adjective work here.
