Varnish is a clear or lightly colored liquid that people paint onto wood to protect it and make it shine - once it dries, it becomes hard and glossy. In British English, 'nail varnish' is the word for what Americans call nail polish. There's also a figurative use: 'to varnish the truth' means to make something sound nicer than it really is, hiding the bad parts.
