Variance means the amount of difference or change between things that you might expect to be the same. In everyday talk, you will meet the phrase 'at variance with' — meaning something does not match or agree with something else ('his story is at variance with the facts'). In and science, variance has a specific technical meaning: a number that measures how spread out a set of data is from the average. Outside of math class, most people use the everyday sense — disagreement or a difference between two things.
