Vanderbilt is the family name of one of the richest American families in history. Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794–1877) started with one small boat and built a fortune from and then railways; at his death he was the richest man in America. His family spent much of it on enormous houses — the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina is still the largest private house in the United States. Later members include Gloria Vanderbilt (1924–2019), a fashion designer whose name went on jeans in the 1970s and 80s, and her son, the news presenter Anderson . Because of all this, the name works as a shorthand in English for old, inherited, American money — ‘he lives like a Vanderbilt’. Vanderbilt University in Nashville is named after Cornelius, who gave it money in 1873; among Americans the word probably brings the university to mind before it brings the family. Since it is a family name, write it with a capital V.
組成From Dutch van der Bilt — van ‘from’ + der ‘the’ + De Bilt, a town in the Netherlands. So the name literally means ‘from De Bilt’. The family were Dutch settlers in New York when it was still called New Amsterdam.
