A small case for carrying clothes on a short journey — an old-fashioned word for a small suitcase or travelling bag, usually soft-sided, the kind you carry in one hand for a night or two away. The word matters less for its meaning than for its age: almost nobody says it now. If you meet it, you are almost certainly reading a novel, a history, or something written to sound old or elegant. Say suitcase, bag, or overnight bag in real life. Because it comes from French, some speakers give it a slightly fancy sound, and writers sometimes use it on purpose to make a character seem well-travelled, old, or from another time. It is pronounced roughly 'va-LEES', with the s sounding like a z.
