In the old Norse stories — the myths of Vikings and their gods — Valhalla is the great hall in where warriors go after they die in battle. Not everyone gets in; the Valkyries choose. Inside, the dead fight all day, and every evening their wounds heal and they eat and drink together, waiting for the last great battle at the end of the world. It is the Norse idea of a soldier's heaven, though 'heaven' is not quite right — it is a hall, with a roof and long tables and noise. Because of films, games and comics, most young people today meet the word here first rather than in a book of myths. In everyday English people also use it loosely for any perfect place for a particular kind of person: 'the shop is a Valhalla for guitar players', meaning the place where people like that would most want to be. That use is a little playful and a little grand. You will also see 'go to Valhalla' or 'see you in Valhalla' said half-jokingly by people about to do something difficult together. It keeps its capital letter, because it is the name of one particular place.
組成From Old Norse Valhǫll: valr 'the dead lying on a battlefield' + hǫll 'hall'. So: the hall of the battle-dead.
