A V-2 was是 Germany德國 in the last part of World War II在二戰最後一段時間 fired at cities朝城市發射 a big rocket-bomb的一種大型火箭炸彈, mostly at London主要打倫敦 and at Antwerp in Belgium和比利時的安特衛普。It它 is a proper name是專有名稱, for one particular weapon指一種特定的武器, not a general word不是一般的字, so所以 it它 almost always幾乎都 with a capital V and a hyphen帶著大寫 V 和連字號 appears出現: the V-2、a V-2 rocket、V-2s。You你 in history books, museums, and documentaries會在歷史書、博物館和紀錄片裡 meet it遇到它, and hardly ever in daily talk日常談話裡幾乎不會。
Two things made it at the time. It flew very high and came down faster than sound, so there was no warning noise before it hit — the explosion came first, and the sound of it falling came after. And nothing could shoot it down.
Two things有兩件事 at the time在當時 made it frightening讓它很嚇人。It它 flew very high飛得很高, and came down掉下來時 faster than比 sound聲音 還快, so所以 before it hit在它落地之前 there was no warning noise沒有任何預警的聲音 — the explosion爆炸 came first先到, and the sound of it falling它落下的聲音 came after後到。And而且 nothing沒有任何東西 could shoot it down能把它打下來。
Its full German name means "revenge weapon two", because the Germans said they were paying Britain back for bombing German cities. The V-1 was the earlier one, a small flying machine with an engine that buzzed and then went silent before it dropped, so people did get a few seconds of warning. That is the main difference students should hold on to: V-1 buzzed, V-2 gave you nothing.
Its full German name它完整的德文名字 means意思是 "revenge weapon two"「復仇武器二號」, because因為 the Germans德國人 said說 they他們 for bombing German cities為了德國城市被轟炸的事 were paying Britain back在回敬英國。The V-1 was是 the earlier one較早的那一種, a small flying machine一種小型飛行機器, with an engine引擎 that buzzed會嗡嗡響, and then然後 before it dropped在落下之前 went silent變安靜, so所以 people人們 did get確實有 a few seconds of warning幾秒鐘的警告。That那 is是 students學生 should hold on to最該抓住 the main difference的主要差別: V-1 buzzed V-1 有嗡嗡聲, V-2 gave you nothing V-2 什麼都不給你。
The V-2 is also the reason we can say something else about it — it was the first man-made object to reach space, and the men who built it later built rockets for the American space programme. So it sits in two stories at once: a weapon that killed thousands, and the grandfather of the rockets that went to the moon. Writers often use it for that double feeling.
The V-2 is also也是 we can say something else about it我們能再多說它一件事 the reason的原因 — it它 was是 the first man-made object第一個 to reach space到達太空的人造物體, and而 the men who built it造它的那些人 later後來 for the American space programme為美國的太空計畫 built rockets造了火箭。So所以 it它 sits in two stories at once同時站在兩個故事裡: a weapon that killed thousands一件害死幾千人的武器, and也是 the rockets that went to the moon登上月球的那些火箭 the grandfather of的祖父。Writers寫作的人 often常 for that double feeling為了那種雙重的感覺 use it用它。
組成From German Vergeltungswaffe zwei — Vergeltung means "revenge, paying back", Waffe means "weapon", zwei means "two". So: revenge weapon number two. The V we keep in English is the V of that German word for revenge, not an English word.
