The uvula is that small soft flap of flesh that hangs down at the back of the roof of your mouth, right in front of your throat. Open your mouth wide in front of a mirror, say "ah," and it is the little teardrop you can see swinging in the middle. Its job is partly to help close off the passage to your nose when you swallow, so food and drink do not come out of your nose; it also helps produce certain sounds in some languages — the French "r" is made near it. In cartoons, it is the wobbly thing drawn in the mouth of a character who is screaming. The plural is "uvulas," or in medical writing "uvulae." The adjective is "uvular," which linguists use for sounds made back there. It is a doctor's word more than a daily one — most English speakers know the thing but not the name, and would just say "that dangly bit at the back of my throat." If yours swells up, doctors call it uvulitis, and it feels like something is stuck in your throat.
