UVF stands for the Ulster Volunteer Force. It was an illegal armed group in Northern Ireland, on the loyalist or side — the side that wanted Northern Ireland to stay part of the United Kingdom rather than join the Republic of Ireland. During the long conflict called the Troubles (roughly 1969 to 1998), it attacked and killed people, most of them Catholic civilians, and it was banned by law. It is usually mentioned alongside the IRA, which fought for the opposite goal from the other side. After the peace process, the UVF said in 2007 that it would stop being a military organization, and it later said its weapons had been put beyond use. "Ulster" is an old name for the northern part of Ireland, and "Volunteer Force" borrows the language of a citizen army, which is how such groups liked to describe themselves. In English writing you will meet the word almost only in news, history books, and films about Northern Ireland. It is a proper noun, always capital letters, said as three separate letters. Note that the same three letters can stand for other things in other fields, so context decides.
